The Four Best Shows of Rio Fashion Week

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

The Four Best Shows of Rio Fashion Week
Rio Fashion Week has ended, but its trends and innovative visions are here to stay. Check out the new collections of some of the very prominent Brazilian designers to see for yourself what Rio brings to the world of fashion.

Rio designers are known for their extensive beachwear collections. Here are some of the Brazilian top brands and their fashion visions for spring 2013.

Alexandre Herchcovitch

Skulls are one of Alexandre Herchcovitch's most familiar trademarks. His spring 2013 collection included a few skull motifs, but this time it wasn't at the heart of the show. This time around, the talented Brazilian designer implemented chic cuts of bleached denim and dresses in the color of tea-stained maps of yore, high-waisted skirts and much more. Unlike other Brazilian designers, Herchcovitch decided not to present swimsuits, but rather gorgeous light and summery outfits.

Triya

According to many fashionistas, the Sao Paulo based label Triya held one of the greatest shows at Rio Fashion Week. Fox News wrote that “many of Triya’s offerings looked like what you might get to wear to an ultra-chic beachside rave thrown by a billionaire.” Lovely patterns of blue, purple and violet along with great accessories turned this new collection into a real fashion celebration.

Lenny

One of the great things about Lenny's show was the perfect flow in which one look led to the next. Tropical and floral prints dominated the catwalk, but unlike many other shows, Lenny introduced prints that seem more like 80's graffiti. Lenny's new collection was innovative, inspiring and most of all – full of sex appeal. If you are looking for new beachwear, check out this exotic Brazilian fashion house.

Maria Bonita Extra

The problem with fashion weeks is that sometimes you feel like you see the same things from the same brands. Luckily, in the Maria Bonita Extra fashion show this wasn't the case. The Brazilian brand managed to set the bar high and presented a marvelous collection of swimwear and beachwear. The new collection implements some of the greatest summer trends – head to toe prints, pastel meets neon and hyper constructed hips. In addition, Maria Bonita Extra managed to turn the high-waisted bloomer into a ready-to-wear spectacle.
FashionTV brings you all the best of Rio fashion week. Stay tuned and see some hot swimsuits as well as great designs that we can’t wait to wear next summer.

CFDA Awards 2012: “The Oscars of Fashion”

CFDA Awards 2012: “The Oscars of Fashion”
The 2012 Council of Fashion Designers Awards, aka the greatest night in fashion after the Met Gala, has come and gone and with it, the designers, models, style media, and celebrities have made a grand and glam fashion statement.

What is The CFDA?

The Council of Fashion Designers of America is a non-profit trade organization for North American designers in fashion and accessories based in the United States. The organization currently oversees over 300 fashion designers. The organization was founded in 1962 to advance the stature of fashion design and promote the acceptance of fashion as an art form.  Since 2009, the group’s president is designer Diane von Furstenberg and its Executive Director is Steven Kolb. It also promotes worthwhile causes and has established a Vogue Fashion Fund to help fashion designers get off the ground.

If the CFDA is the leading organization of fashion, then the CFDA Awards might just be the Oscars of fashion.  The awards show, which honors excellence in fashion design, brings out the best designers, celebrities, models, and media personnel from America and all over the world and the event is held in the Lincoln Center in New York City.

Who Won What?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were the darlings of this year’s CFDA Awards, as their brand The Row won for Best Womenswear Designer of The Year.  The 25-year olds really seem to know their style set.  They were up against Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler.  They also stood out in their own fashion, wearing statement dresses their brand.  Mary-Kate’s hair was dyed brown.

Other winners include: Billy Reid for Menswear, Reed Krakoff for Accessories, Joseph Altuzarra for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Womenswear, Phillip Lim for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Menswear and Tabitha Simmons for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Accessories. Other standout awards included the Lifetime Achievement Award given to Tommy Hilfiger and the Fashion Icon Award for Johnny Depp.

Who Wore What?

Lots of designers, models, and celebrities were in attendance for the big event, but only a few really stood out among the fashion crowd.  For celebs, Zoe Saldana stunned in black panel Prabal Gurung, a designer she loves and has worn many times before.  Jessica Chastain also worked Prabal Gurung but in white with a sweet little cape.  Kate Bosworth proved why the fashion world has fallen in love with Joseph Altuzarra, wearing an embellished patterned dress with a cutout showing killer abs.  The night was also full of fashion surprises and not through winners and nominees.  Dakota Fanning, prone to wearing Marc Jacobs, opted for a Proenza Schouler frock.  Anna Wintour, prone to wearing Chanel, opted for Marc Jacobs instead.

The night wouldn’t be complete without the models, of course.  Arizona Muse looked better at this red carpet event than FashionTV has ever seen her in a textured gray mini and stiletto boots. Joan Smalls is privy to wearing detailed ensembles, but this time around she stunned in something simple--a minimalist white dress from Michael Kors. Karolina Kurkova stunned in something completely different from her recent golden embellishment craze--a printed dress. But perhaps Hilary Rhoda took the award for best dressed model of the evening--stunning in a Rebecca Minkoff gown with blue and white cutouts.

Maxim’s 2012: 5 Most Beautiful Women

Every year Maxim magazine chooses the 100 hottest women in the world. This year, for the first time the readers of the magazine were asked to pick the hottest women themselves.

The results were surprising: an Israeli model and Leonardo DiCaprio's ex-girlfriend, Bar Refaeli, won the first place. Who were her 4 closest competitors?

Maxim Magazine's readers have ranked their 100 most beautiful women on earth. Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez, Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr and Jessica Biel were on the list. But on top of all those beauties was one stunning natural-born beauty, Bar Refaeli. The Sports Illustrated cover girl was chosen as the face of Especially Escada fragrance and leads lots of other ad campaigns all over the world. About a year ago she ended a long term relationship with Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, and now she is looking for a new knight. Her topless photoshoots are coveted by men around the world and her smile makes everyone fall in love with her. Bar Refaeli is Maxim's hottest woman for 2012.

Model and TV personality, Olivia Munn, was ranked 2nd on Maxim's hottest women list. Munn has appeared twice as the magazine's cover girl, and her utter sexiness makes it very clear as to why she was ranked so high.

Hollywood actress Mila Kunis got to the 3rd place on Maxim's 2012 list. This brunette stunner kissed Natalie Portman with so much passion in Black Swan, no wonder the guys of Maxim would LOVE to see more from her...

Katy Perry is on the 4th spot of the list. This super talented singer has announced her new single not long ago. Well, it seems like few of those who ranked Perry would love to see her as their new girlfriend. The fact that she is one of the busiest singers in the music industry doesn't bother them.

Former TV doctor from House M.D – Olivia Wilde – closes the top 5 list. Wilde's amazing blue eyes have made her one of the sexiest women in the world; and Maxim's readers clearly share this view.

Although Angelina Jolie and Gisele Bundchen are not on Maxim's hot 100 list, the magazine's readers did a great job in picking 100 women that add grace and glamor to our day to day lives.

Party Baby: The Story of Kumamiki’s Harajuku Fashion Brand

Monday, June 4, 2012

Tokyo street fashion is famous around the world because of the tribes of young creative people who congregate in Harajuku. Beyond their status as international style icons, these fashionable “Harajuku kids” are also the future of the Japanese fashion industry. When we talk to young people we photograph on the streets of Harajuku, they often share aspirations to become fashion designers, models, shop owners, stylists, or to find some other profession that allows them to devote their lives to fashion. Street snap photographs are a wonderful way to document the unique clothing found on the streets of Harajuku, but they aren’t as good at telling the story behind the person wearing those clothes.
Party Baby: The Story of Kumamiki’s Harajuku Fashion Brand

Kumamiki is a young Japanese woman whose kawaii Harajuku look has been featured in countless fashion magazines, books and websites. Kuma is exactly what many people imagine that Harajuku should be – she has rainbow colored hair, loves to wear pastel clothing, and piles on lots of quirky accessories and hair bows big and small. That’s the part of Kuma that you’ve seen in photos. We would like to go beyond that and share the rest of Kuma’s story with you – the story of a real human being who spent years studying fashion in college, who has a part time job at a shop in Harajuku to pay the bills, who spends most of her free time sewing, and who dreams of her tiny DIY fashion brand Party Baby someday being loved and respected by the next generation of Harajuku kids.

Kumamiki launched her indie fashion brand Party Baby several years ago while she was attending fashion college in Tokyo. She has worked on it slowly but surely while balancing it with her other responsibilities (which include being one of the organizers of Harajuku Fashion Walk). Recently, Kuma decided that it was time to get more serious about Party Baby.

When Kuma told us that she was planning her first ever Party Baby fashion show, we asked her if we could tag along with our video cameras to document the milestone. She was kind enough to not only give us full access to her world in the days before the event, but also to sit down with us several times and talk about her life. We could write a lot more about Kumamiki, but we’d prefer that you hear what she has to say directly from her own mouth. Please take a look at our short documentary below. We hope that it gives you insight into the real person behind all of the pretty pictures you see in magazines!

Young At Heart – The Story of Kumamiki & Party Baby

During the filming of this movie, several cool things began happening for Kumamiki and Party Baby. Kuma was able to partner with her first ever international mailorder company (Electric Alice). As a designer who is very interested in the world outside of Japan, making Party Baby available to buyers outside of Japan is an important goal. Kuma also found out that she would be featured on both NHK and FujiTV (both major Japanese television networks) in the near future. Kumamiki continues to actively work on building her brand – while always remaining a “Harajuku kid” at heart.

Carol’s Daughter Drops New 3-Step Transitioning Kit

Carol’s Daughter Drops New 3-Step Transitioning Kit
Carol’s Daughter is finally starting to roll out products for the transitioning movement it announced a while back and the first release from the line is a new Transitioning 1-2-3 kit specifically designed to help women who are moving from relaxed to natural hair.

The three parts of the kit are:
  1. A purifying low-lather cleanser designed to remove product buildup. According to how-to tips in a review by Christina Brown of lovebrownsugar.com, this is not a moisturizing shampoo; it is specifically designed to clarify your strands and strip them of product which is why you’ll need to the other pieces of the line to fully reap the benefits for your hair.
  2. Step 2 is a renewing scalp spray that you place on wet hair to clarify and exfoliate your scalp. You should part your hair every 1/2 inch and spray the product about four inches from your scalp; when your whole head is saturated, massage for 1 minute then let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing. This product is particularly useful if you have protective styles like kinky twists or braids where you can’t wash your entire head because it will at least remove product buildup at the roots.
  3. The final step is a restoring anti-breakage treatment which any transitioner can tell you is crucial. You should leave this product on your head for 15 minutes like a deep conditioner and then rinse.
According to independent study results on the website, 93% of women who tried the new kit said they experienced less shedding and had a healthier scalp and softer Strands. Beyond Christina Brown’s written review, Mae from Naturalchica.com also did a video review you can check out below.
