You’ve probably noticed by now that there’s a trend that’s catching
on big time among celebs and everyday retailers: high-low skirts. At
first people were a bit slow to latch on to this look because it was
like a bad 80s revival, hence the nickname “mullet skirt.” We all
remember the poofy dresses that were short in the front, long in the
back, and sometimes tiered, and nobody wanted to return to that look.
But thanks to some simplifying and a 2012 upgrade, this style is coming
back in a fashion forward way this season and we like.
There’s lots of variety for how you can pull this trend off. In the
pic above, Angela Simmons opted for a fitted max-dress with a high-low
skirt that has a dramatic contrast between the front and the back. On
the other end, Christina Milian is pulling off a very flamenco-style
high-low skirt with frill around the hemline. In the middle, Nicole
Richie has the skirt style most retailers like Urban Outfitters and
Forever 21 have been going for, which is a flowy pattern that’s really
perfect for the spring and summer temperatures.
We’re always excited about a new dress or skirt style we can try and
this look definitely ups the fashion factor when compared to the maxi,
bohemian, and short skirts that rule this season. The unexpectedly cool
thing about this style is that when that random gust of wind hits you,
you won’t have to worry about showing all of your goods because this
long train has you covered–it’s a stylishly practical win-win. You can
also rock this style for a casual day look or dress it up for nighttime.
Nicole Richie has even worn a formal dress with this style of skirt so
we expect to see more evening dresses with this trend pop up on the red
carpet this season.
