Marc Jacobs may not have been a winner at the Council of Fashion
Designers of America’s annual awards show on Monday night, but his dress
was the star. Seth Meyers, the evening’s host, turned Mr. Jacobs’s
black lace number — the Comme des Garcon shirt dress he wore at the
recent Costume Institute party, over white boxers — into comic material.
Later in the show, Mr. Meyers appeared in the dress, remarking, “This
has such good ventilation.” He also joked that he had consumed 11 drinks
since his opening monologue.
The
CFDA show, at Lincoln Center, may have been the fastest in memory,
helped by the fact that John Waters, the director and writer, gave
awards to both the actor Johnny Depp and Rei Kawakubo, the designer of Comme des Garcons,
who were missing in action. Mr. Depp, winner of the icon award, was
filming “The Lone Ranger,” and Ms. Kawakubo, winner of the international
award, was at home in Tokyo. With the scowl of an old-time preacher at
the pulpit, Mr. Waters noted that Ms. Kawakubo’s clothes often look so
bizarre and threadbare that “the fashion-impaired public feels sorry for
us.”
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen won the women’s design award, for
their label The Row. Billy Reid won the top men’s fashion prize, while
Reed Krakoff was recognized for accessories. The Swarovski awards for
young talent went to Phillip Lim (menswear), Joseph Altuzarra (women’s)
and Tabitha Simmons (accessories).
Anna Wintour presented Tommy
Hilfiger with a lifetime achievement award (with a performance by the
Princeton Footlight singers, dressed in matching Hilfiger varsity
outfits). Andrew Rosen of Theory received a founder’s award, and the
street photographers/bloggers Garance Dore and Scott Schuman were given
the media award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard.
