Michelle Williams is Designing a Collection For African Clothing Brand Koshie O.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Michelle Williams is Designing a Collection For African Clothing Brand Koshie O.
Michelle Williams has been carving out a unique career of her own since Destiny’s Child parted ways. After tackling gospel music and Broadway, the singer is ready for a new challenge in fashion by designing new pieces for Koshio O’s spring/summer 2013 collection

The collaboration is part of the African brand’s “The Koshie O. Woman” campaign which is an initiative using female celebrities to celebrate strong, confident and bold women who are able to juggle various day-to day tasks while staying fashionable and stylish. Nina Baksmaty, founder and Creative director of Koshie O. says Michelle Williams was chosen because she brings authenticity and knowledge to the brand.
”It is such an honor to have Michelle Williams design pieces for Koshie O,” she said. She has been an inspiration of mine from her Destiny’s Child days up until now and I know the public is going to love what Koshie O. and Michelle Williams will come up with.”
Sample pieces will be available for buyers starting in July, but the general public will have to wait until next spring to purchase anything from this new line. The brand hasn’t let many details slip about the designs these two have come up with, but they did say that this will be the first collection of Koshie O. where customized prints will be used on the fabrics. Sounds promising!
Check out Koshio O.‘s site to get a feel for their line and what’s coming up.

Fashion Awards, on Speed Dial

Fashion Awards, on Speed Dial
Marc Jacobs may not have been a winner at the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s annual awards show on Monday night, but his dress was the star. Seth Meyers, the evening’s host, turned Mr. Jacobs’s black lace number — the Comme des Garcon shirt dress he wore at the recent Costume Institute party, over white boxers — into comic material. Later in the show, Mr. Meyers appeared in the dress, remarking, “This has such good ventilation.” He also joked that he had consumed 11 drinks since his opening monologue.

The CFDA show, at Lincoln Center, may have been the fastest in memory, helped by the fact that John Waters, the director and writer, gave awards to both the actor Johnny Depp and Rei Kawakubo, the designer of Comme des Garcons, who were missing in action. Mr. Depp, winner of the icon award, was filming “The Lone Ranger,” and Ms. Kawakubo, winner of the international award, was at home in Tokyo. With the scowl of an old-time preacher at the pulpit, Mr. Waters noted that Ms. Kawakubo’s clothes often look so bizarre and threadbare that “the fashion-impaired public feels sorry for us.”

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen won the women’s design award, for their label The Row. Billy Reid won the top men’s fashion prize, while Reed Krakoff was recognized for accessories. The Swarovski awards for young talent went to Phillip Lim (menswear), Joseph Altuzarra (women’s) and Tabitha Simmons (accessories).

Anna Wintour presented Tommy Hilfiger with a lifetime achievement award (with a performance by the Princeton Footlight singers, dressed in matching Hilfiger varsity outfits). Andrew Rosen of Theory received a founder’s award, and the street photographers/bloggers Garance Dore and Scott Schuman were given the media award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard.

NICOPANDA Popup Shop in Tokyo + Hirari Ikeda Styled by Nicola Formichetti

Monday, June 4, 2012

Nicola Formichetti is possibly the most influential fashion stylist in the world today. His work is wide ranging – from jaw-dropping theatrical styling for Lady Gaga to high-end Mugler collections to affordable everyday clothes for Uniqlo. He’s also worked with countless international brands and fashion magazines, including holding the title of fashion director at Vogue Hommes Japan. That resume would be enough to keep most people busy 24/7 and then some. But Nicola Formichetti is not most people!

Formichetti has been all over Tokyo in the last week spreading the gospel of NICOPANDA. We can’t keep track of every hip shop where NICOPANDAs have appeared in the window, but they are highly visible in both Harajuku (LHP) and Shibuya (Opening Ceremony). On Monday, he opened an official NICOPANDA popup shop and gallery at the famous Isetan Shinjuku department store.

We are big fans of Nicola Formichetti, so we hit the NICOPANDA popup shop at Isetan on the first day to see what it was all about. We missed meeting up with Nicola, but we were lucky enough to run into his brother Andrea, who allowed us to take pictures of the shop to share with you.

The NICOPANDA popup shop is well-stocked with NICOPANDA goods – including jackets, t-shirts, mugs, jewelry, and toys (Hello Kitty, Bearbrick & Lady Gaga collaborations). One of the stand-out items for us was NICOPANDA nail art designed by Nicola and handmade by the famous nail artist Aiko from esNAIL (who does nail art for countless Japanese celebrities, most notably Ayumi Hamasaki). There were also a lot of NICOPANDA plush dolls, including a “Zombie Panda” version based on Zombie Boy. Unfortunately, the plush pandas were not for sale yet. We were told they should be available soon.

Besides the items for sale, the NICOPANDA popup shop also features a “Future Fashion” art exhibition with original paintings by Nicola Formichetti along with a series of stylized photographs. One of the models featured in the photographs is none other than Hirari Ikeda. We have long believed that Hirari is on the leading edge of Japanese street fashion, so we were excited to see Nicola Formichetti – one of the most famous stylists in the world – include her in a show called “Future Fashion”. There are other Harajuku street fashion personalities featured in the photos as well, so don’t miss this one.

Check out our pictures of the NICOPANDA shop – and a selection of photographs from Formichetti’s “Future Fashion” series – below.

We See You: Eve Shows Off Kicks for New Reebok Documentary

We See You: Eve Shows Off Kicks for New Reebok Documentary
They don’t call ‘em Reebok Classics for nothing. The training shoe first hit the scene in 1987 and has had various waves of popularity in the 25 years since it’s launch. Now Reebok is getting ready to release a new documentary detailing just how this sneaker became a true classic and they’ve brought along Eve to help.

The Philly rapper was spotted in her hometown showing off some hot classics in shades from neon pink pair to bright turquoise, and a simple white pair during a visit to her old classroom days at Martin Luther King Jr. High School.

Eve walked through her old neighborhood looking fly and even performed at the Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia as she talked about keeping it street and sexy in the classics. The entire documentary series will feature more intriguing stories like this from participating artists and people who influenced them throughout their journey, along with intimate live performances from each artist.
Eve’s documentary for Reebok Classics and Complex Magazine will be out later this month. We can’t wait to see who’s next!
