MISSONI boss
Vittorio Missoni and his wife, Maurizia Castiglioni, are missing,
after a small plane carrying the couple disappeared off the coast
of Venezuela mid-morning on Friday. The pair were among six people
on board the flight from the archipelago of Los Roques towards
Caracas' Maiquetia airport. A search is currently in operation.
Michelle Williams has been carving out a unique career of her own
since Destiny’s Child parted ways. After tackling gospel music and
Broadway, the singer is ready for a new challenge in fashion by
designing new pieces for Koshio O’s spring/summer 2013 collection
The collaboration is part of the African brand’s “The Koshie O.
Woman” campaign which is an initiative using female celebrities to
celebrate strong, confident and bold women who are able to juggle
various day-to day tasks while staying fashionable and stylish. Nina
Baksmaty, founder and Creative director of Koshie O. says Michelle
Williams was chosen because she brings authenticity and knowledge to the brand.
”It is such an honor to have Michelle Williams design pieces for Koshie O,” she said. She has been an inspiration of mine from her Destiny’s Child days up until now and I know the public is going to love what Koshie O. and Michelle Williams will come up with.”
Sample pieces will be available for buyers starting in
July, but the general public will have to wait until next spring to
purchase anything from this new line. The brand hasn’t let many details
slip about the designs these two have come up with, but they did say
that this will be the first collection of Koshie O. where customized
prints will be used on the fabrics. Sounds promising!
Check out Koshio O.‘s site to get a feel for their line and what’s coming up.
Marc Jacobs may not have been a winner at the Council of Fashion
Designers of America’s annual awards show on Monday night, but his dress
was the star. Seth Meyers, the evening’s host, turned Mr. Jacobs’s
black lace number — the Comme des Garcon shirt dress he wore at the
recent Costume Institute party, over white boxers — into comic material.
Later in the show, Mr. Meyers appeared in the dress, remarking, “This
has such good ventilation.” He also joked that he had consumed 11 drinks
since his opening monologue.
The
CFDA show, at Lincoln Center, may have been the fastest in memory,
helped by the fact that John Waters, the director and writer, gave
awards to both the actor Johnny Depp and Rei Kawakubo, the designer of Comme des Garcons,
who were missing in action. Mr. Depp, winner of the icon award, was
filming “The Lone Ranger,” and Ms. Kawakubo, winner of the international
award, was at home in Tokyo. With the scowl of an old-time preacher at
the pulpit, Mr. Waters noted that Ms. Kawakubo’s clothes often look so
bizarre and threadbare that “the fashion-impaired public feels sorry for
us.”
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen won the women’s design award, for
their label The Row. Billy Reid won the top men’s fashion prize, while
Reed Krakoff was recognized for accessories. The Swarovski awards for
young talent went to Phillip Lim (menswear), Joseph Altuzarra (women’s)
and Tabitha Simmons (accessories).
Anna Wintour presented Tommy
Hilfiger with a lifetime achievement award (with a performance by the
Princeton Footlight singers, dressed in matching Hilfiger varsity
outfits). Andrew Rosen of Theory received a founder’s award, and the
street photographers/bloggers Garance Dore and Scott Schuman were given
the media award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard.
Nicola Formichetti is possibly the most influential fashion stylist
in the world today. His work is wide ranging – from jaw-dropping
theatrical styling for Lady Gaga to high-end Mugler collections to
affordable everyday clothes for Uniqlo. He’s also worked with countless
international brands and fashion magazines, including holding the title
of fashion director at Vogue Hommes Japan. That resume would be enough
to keep most people busy 24/7 and then some. But Nicola Formichetti is
not most people!
Formichetti has been all over Tokyo in the last week spreading the
gospel of NICOPANDA. We can’t keep track of every hip shop where
NICOPANDAs have appeared in the window, but they are highly visible in
both Harajuku (LHP) and Shibuya (Opening Ceremony). On Monday, he opened
an official NICOPANDA popup shop and gallery at the famous Isetan
Shinjuku department store.
We are big fans of Nicola Formichetti, so we hit the NICOPANDA popup
shop at Isetan on the first day to see what it was all about. We missed
meeting up with Nicola, but we were lucky enough to run into his brother
Andrea, who allowed us to take pictures of the shop to share with you.
The NICOPANDA popup shop is well-stocked with NICOPANDA goods –
including jackets, t-shirts, mugs, jewelry, and toys (Hello Kitty,
Bearbrick & Lady Gaga collaborations). One of the stand-out items
for us was NICOPANDA nail art designed by Nicola and handmade by the
famous nail artist Aiko from esNAIL (who does nail art for countless
Japanese celebrities, most notably Ayumi Hamasaki). There were also a
lot of NICOPANDA plush dolls, including a “Zombie Panda” version based
on Zombie Boy. Unfortunately, the plush pandas were not for sale yet. We
were told they should be available soon.
Besides the items for sale, the NICOPANDA popup shop also features a
“Future Fashion” art exhibition with original paintings by Nicola
Formichetti along with a series of stylized photographs. One of the
models featured in the photographs is none other than Hirari Ikeda. We
have long believed that Hirari is on the leading edge of Japanese street
fashion, so we were excited to see Nicola Formichetti – one of the most
famous stylists in the world – include her in a show called “Future
Fashion”. There are other Harajuku street fashion personalities featured
in the photos as well, so don’t miss this one.
Check out our pictures of the NICOPANDA shop – and a selection of
photographs from Formichetti’s “Future Fashion” series – below.
All of the photos above except the shop photos are part of Nicola Formichetti’s “Future Fashion” project.
The credits for the photos are as follows. Nicola Formichetti presents “Future Fashion”:
They don’t call ‘em Reebok Classics for nothing. The training shoe
first hit the scene in 1987 and has had various waves of popularity in
the 25 years since it’s launch. Now Reebok is getting ready to release a
new documentary detailing just how this sneaker became a true classic
and they’ve brought along Eve to help.
The Philly rapper was spotted in her hometown showing off some hot
classics in shades from neon pink pair to bright turquoise, and a simple
white pair during a visit to her old classroom days at Martin Luther
King Jr. High School.
Eve walked through her old neighborhood looking fly and even
performed at the Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia as she talked about
keeping it street and sexy in the classics. The entire documentary
series will feature more intriguing stories like this from participating
artists and people who influenced them throughout their journey, along
with intimate live performances from each artist.
Eve’s documentary for Reebok Classics and Complex Magazine will be out later this month. We can’t wait to see who’s next!
Arizona Muse, Liya Kebede and Abbey Lee Kershaw are just a few of
the top models who agreed to take part in Anja Rubik’s erotic magazine.
The
new mag features 300 pages of amazing fashion production photographed
by the world’s best female photographers. Anja Rubik presents, “25”
Magazine.
In 2009 top model Anja Rubik debuted “25” magazine. This
year, during the Cannes festival, Rubik and her husband, Sasha
Knezevic, relaunched the magazine, dedicating its first issue to the art
of erotica. Throughout the creative process, Rubik was inspired by the
style of 70s issues like “Viva,” and the aesthetics of “Penthouse” and
“Playboy” magazines.
The new “25” is not a sleazy or girly
magazine; on the contrary, it pays homage to females in the fashion
industry. It is a huge fashion production that includes 300 fashion
photographs without any ad campaigns. All the photographs in the
magazine were taken by incredibly talented female photographers, among
them Annie Leibovitz, Inez van Lamsweerde, Corrine Day, and Ellen von
Unwerth.
In order to make “25” even more outstanding, Rubik
gathered a few of her fellow top models to pose nude and be a part of
the new phenomena. Arizona Muse and Liya Kebede said yes to Rubik’s
fashion project, and Abbey Lee Kershaw also agreed to be in the video
and a teaser for the renewed magazine.
"25 is basically
directed toward very strong-minded, ambitious women, who are very
comfortable with themselves and their sexuality,” Rubik told models.com.
“I was thinking a lot recently and looking how sex, nudity and bodies
are approached nowadays. Erotica kind of disappeared. The way we
approach sex is either really prude or very vulgar".
Although
there is a lot of nudity in the new “25,” Rubik emphasizes that it also
includes a lot of fashion. “The stylists had a lot of liberty to play
around with clothes, and there was no list of credits they had to follow
or anything like that," said the top model, who is very thrilled to be
on the other side of the camera for a change.
Last night at the MTV Movie Awards, Johnny Depp took the stage—but
not just to accept his award. He accompanied The Black Keys—who he later
called “up-and-coming legends”—on guitar for special performances of the band’s tracks “Gold on the Ceiling” and “Lonely Boy.”
Depp is set to be honored with back-to-back awards: after last night’s Generation Award, the CFDA is bestowing him with a Fashion Icon Award at tonight’s ceremony. There will be no guitar-playing Depp in attendance, though: he was reported last week to be skipping because he’s on location in the Navajo Nation shooting The Lone Ranger.
Regardless, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, who were
presenting last night, praised Depp for his “gutsiness as an artist,”
calling him “a rock star”—see the performance for yourself after the
cut.
Drew Barrymore is a married woman: she tied the knot
over the weekend with her fiancé of five months, art dealer Will
Kopelman, at her Montecito, California home. The bride wore
Chanel—Kopelman’s father is a former Chanel CEO, after all.
Earlier this year, Barrymore had said
she wanted her dress to be “something tasteful, something timeless”; it
turned out to be long and white—in pleated muslin and
organza—reportedly designed
by Karl Lagerfeld himself. The skirt was embroidered with flowers in
organza, muslin, tulle, and feathers, and a black satin belt accentuated
the waist, Us reports. Barrymore accessorized with Chanel Fine Jewelry and added a black tweed Chanel jacket for the reception.
Among the wedding’s attendees? Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim
Toth, Busy Phillipps, Jimmy Fallon, and Cameron Diaz, who was spotted last week accompanying Barrymore to her final dress fitting.
Kate Middleton’s predilection
for Alexander McQueen dresses is still going strong. Every time she’s
worn a dress designed by Sarah Burton for McQueen, it’s had long
sleeves, and the latest is no exception.
For her appearance in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant in
London yesterday, Middleton wore a red dress from McQueen’s Pre-Fall
2011 collection—which had been worn previously
by Kim Kardashian—but had it customized with the aforementioned sleeves
and a longer, knee-skimming hemline. She paired it with her favorite
nude LK Bennett heels and a matching red clutch and Sylvia Fletcher hat.
The dress‚ with its long sleeves and pleated skirt, is not dissimilar to the Emilia Wickstead dress Middleton wore last week—she certainly has a penchant for that combination. And it seems she may have color coordinated
with her mother and sister yesterday, in a subtle nod to the Union
Jack: while Kate was in red, Pippa wore navy and white, and Carole
Middleton went with white.
Mod’Art India, a
subsidiary of Mod’Art International Paris organized their Annual
Fashion Show ‘A la Mode’ 2012 with oomph and élan at Tryst – The Music

European Fashion customized in the spirit of opulence to enhance the
western appearance of today’s youth.
Gracing up the event was Mr. Patrice De Place, President of Mod’Art
Paris and former Director of Christian Dior and Celine who shared,
“Since the fashion industry is constantly evolving and is a highly
consumer focused business, the real challenge is to meet aspirations
that keep shifting because of global influences. Mod’Art aims to educate
fashion enthusiasts to use the French knowledge in the fashion area in
India to fuel the growth of indigenous design. I congratulate all the
students for their amazing work done.”

Magda Berliner’s dresses and skirts made from collages of vintage
white lace have earned her a cult following, but the one-of-a-kind
pieces can be hard to find. “A kind of indie fan club developed after
Ashley Olsen wore one of my lace dresses six years ago,” Berliner told
the Los Angeles Times.
“I was getting emails from young girls who wanted the same dress, but I
had to explain that each dress was one-of-a-kind and had to be custom
made.”
Shopbop is making the process a little easier: the online retailer has collaborated with Berliner on a three-piece capsule—two
dresses and a skirt. Although the silhouettes have been standardized,
they’re still hand-assembled, and the vintage lace still varies from
piece to piece. “I have dresses made from the edges of tablecloths,
runners, tea towels and pillow cases,” Berliner noted. “Some of the
lace pieces have been handed down, so you will see initials or letters
of the alphabet or animal themes if they were made for children.”
She worships Daria Werbowy and Coco Rocha, she is one of the hottest
rising models out there and Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Moschino and
Dolce & Gabbana are just a few of the top designers she has already
worked with. That said, Canada’s Kate King is our Model of The Week.
Kate
King’s look is certainly not common on the catwalks. She is Brunette
with hazel eyes in an era that blonde and bright dominates the runway.
Still, the young model seems to be everywhere. From billboards to the
famed fashion shows of Milan, Paris and New York, King’s career has only
begun.
It began in 2006, when 13 year-old King went with her mom
and two sisters to watch a musical on Broadway, when a stranger
approached King and asked her if she modeled. Though King hoped she
would one day work the runway, she decided to first complete her High
School degree. At 17, Kate King walked in for an interview at Elite
Models Agency, in which she was signed on the spot.
Rocking the Runway
The
young Kate King first debuted on the runway during the Fall Rag &
Bone fashion show in New York. In addition, she walked for Michael Kors,
Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs. As she was strutting
her talent in New York, King was already booked for Milan Fashion Week.
In
Milan she received the chance to open the Fall Moschino show, in which
she later admitted to during an interview that it was an amazing
experience. As well as Moschino, King walked for Dolce & Gabbana,
Prada, Missoni and Pucci.
King also graced at Paris Fashion Week.
The Canadian walked for Dior, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis
Vuitton, Lanvin and Nina Ricci. No doubt about it, Fall 2011 was a
highlight season for King!
Her
career is in full throttle as she opened the next season for Chloe and
Cynthia Rowley in Paris and New York Fashion Week, as well as closing
Nicole Miller and Margaret Howell.
Cover Girl
Nineteen year-old Kate King did not land on a
magazine cover yet, however, she was photographed for quite a few
prestigious fashion magazine productions. In 2011, King was photographed
for i-D, Another and Love magazines. The same year, she posed for
Swedish photographer Kacper Kasprzyk for Dazed and Confused magazine.
Ad Star
Shortly
after walking for Dolce & Gabbana, King worked along with the duo
Italian designers once again. The Canadian model appeared on the brand’s
Fall campaign as well as for Topshop.
Fashion Forward
Like her fellow Canadian top models – Daria Werbowy
and Coco Rocha, Kate King is enjoying her new profession with
everything she’s got. Travelling around the world and posing for photo
shoots have officially become her daily routine. It is safe to say that
Kate King is building her international modeling career step by step.
King may become a figure that will end up lighting the catwalks for many
years to come. As far as the world knows, there is nothing that can
stop this woman from reaching the top.
After John Galliano’s infamous anti-Semitic rant in Paris last April, many wondered how his sudden departure from Dior would affect the French fashion house.
According to the Financial Times,
not only did Galliano’s departure leave the company relatively
unscathed, but they actually ended up with their highest earnings per
annum ever, hitting $1 billion in 2011. “I never considered that,” Sidney Toledano, the president of Dior said. “I always thought we absolutely needed an artistic director.”
It makes you wonder: how important is a charismatic designer to a
fashion house? Is it worth the potential risk that sometimes accompanies
a more flamboyant style of creative genius?
Toledano seems to think so. Though he admitted that Dior still fared
well financially without Galliano, he did stress how important he felt
designers were for shaping a label’s identity, likening designers to “a
shorthand to help consumers understand the brand, and to embody it.”
Does that mean someone like the more demure Raf Simons, who is taking
over Galliano’s post for Dior, might not have the same capacity to
“embody” the brand? According to Toledano, it all comes down to the
individual.
“If [charisma] works for the designer, then fine . . . but if not, it
can be counterproductive, and it is better to avoid it. In the end,
luxury is judged not by whether a designer’s face is on X number of
posters, but by their work.”
Our bet is that if Simons’ tenure at Jil Sander was anything to go by, his work will more than speak for itself.
THEY SAID…
Jada Wong: “And the pressure’s on, Raf.” [Styleite]
Cheryl Wischhover: “We have no doubt that Simons
will do amazing things for the house of Dior, but it will be interesting
to watch how labels continue to manage the increasingly frequent
hirings and firings of creative directors and how it affects their
bottom lines.” [Fashionista]
WE SAID…
Bernadette Morra, Editor-in-Chief: “A creative
director is absolutely vital to the continued growth and development of a
brand. True, Dior may be able to coast without a strong creative force
at the helm for a while, but not for the long term.”
This week on FashionTV’s Top Trending Video countdown, the
Cannes Film Festival exclusive videos have received the main spotlight,
with three clips from Cannes featured on the top-five list.
Another
high-profile event that caught the eye of many viewers this week was
the Pronovias 2013 Bridal show in Barcelona. Let’s take a look at the
countdown:
1. Cannes 2012: Day 1
Fashion lovers, celebrity
followers, and movie fans all tune in each year to the most exciting
film festival around, Cannes. This year was the 65th Annual Cannes Film
Festival and day one opened in promising style.
Sacha Baron Cohen
was up to his antics again, dressing up as his film character, The
Dictator, and adding a little spice to the event. Other celebs in the
video include the actors of Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” which
opened the festival, including Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and Edward
Norton.
2. Pronovias 2013 Bridalwear Show
Leading bridal fashion
giants Pronovias showcased their Spring/Summer 2013 collection in
Barcelona this past week. Bridal fashion has become increasingly more
and more popular each year, with the introduction of new garments,
innovative styles, and less conservative takes on wedding dresses.
The Pronovias show featured appearances from top models Karolina Kurkova, Magdalena Frackowiak, and Lais Ribeiro.
3. Cannes 2012: Day 2
On the second day of Cannes, the red
carpet looked as luxurious as ever when Eva Longoria, Marion Cotillard,
and Freida Pinto walked across it looking like true princesses in their
Emilio Pucci, Christian Dior, and Atelier Versace gown.
4. Bar Refaeli, Karolina Kurkova at Pronovias 2013
Is Bar
Refaeli shopping for a wedding gown? Although that is highly unlikely at
the moment, it didn’t stop her from making a glamorous appearance at
the Pronovias show. Refaeli described the show to FashionTV as being “a
little bit scary, because you know, big dresses, and you wanna have all
the impact, and you know be very special and there's a lot of great
models behind the scenes, so it's very exciting.”
5. Salma Hayek on the Cannes Red Carpet
Every day at Cannes
there’s something new to see. Day three featured a handful of wonderful
celebrity appearances including Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Martin Short,
Jessica Chastain, and Jada Pinkett Smith, who all featured their voices
in the movie “Madagascar 3.”
Heavyweight actors such as Robert De
Niro, James Woods, Salma Hayek, and Jennifer Connelly all made
appearances at the Gucci Film Foundation premiere of “Once Upon a Time
in America.” Jennifer Connelly along with Salma Hayek were both clad in
stunning Gucci dresses to fit the event.
